Every time I hear about a mobilization somewhere around the world, I can't help but feel sorry for those involved. Venezuala had 10 battalions sent to its border with Ecuador about a week odd back. 10 battalions supported by tanks! That's thousands of soldiers mobilised and called into action! Sometimes oil is truly a pain in the ass. Emboldened by the scarcity and price of oil, several countries now have new found power. The ruling parties of these countries should all gather together for a screening of Spiderman 1 and listen to the wise old words of Peter Parker's uncle.
Anyway consumer spending jumped 20.2% in China in January and February which is a good sign! Part of it could be attributed to inflation I suppose. Even if 1kg of rice now costs 20% more you still have to buy that 1kg of rice. Still, there's hope for consumer spending in Asia. Honestly, I think Asians will increase their spending over time. Look at Singapore! All the crowds during the sales and travel fairs and IT fairs. Being predominantly Chinese, perhaps we offer a peek into the future of China's consumer market.
There's an interesting piece of news coming out of India. To solve the growing gender imbalance, the government is offering $5,000 to the families to raise and educate girls paid over time. The gender ratio of boys to girls in India is now something like 1000:920 or so. Well that's good news for all the future bachelors in India.
I was just thinking last night, Hillary and Obama are creating so much buzz and excitement in the race to be the Democrat's candidate that it already seems like a Presidential race. What would be really ironic is that, for all the time, money and effort spent, John McCain wins the White House race. That would be a really sad ending for the Democrats. There's so much coverage on the Democrats now on all the magazines. It feels rather like playing Risk. Divide and Conquer. Just let your opponents fight to the death amongst themselves while you amass your armies and just walk all over them when they're half-dead.
