Now as you smile bemusedly at the title, allow me to explain how I ended up with it. I had just closed FT after a few games and wondered what I should blog about tonight. Then after a quick run through my mind, I realised that every time DOTA calls and I have to end conversations with girls, common responses include "dota again?!" or something along those lines. And so I am about to enlighten the rest of the community on the merits and basis for playing DOTA.
Firstly, and most importantly, it is a time for people to get together. Similiar to how some may chat on MSN, DOTA is also an avenue to stay in touch with each other and to make new friends. Unknown to many, I only DOTA when I have friends are willing to play with me. Playing on Battle.net against anonymous people is a thing of the past. Making mutual friends is probably more effective in a DOTA game than through MSN. Through a game, you firstly will have something in common and something to talk about. When all fails, just talk about the previous game and suddenly everything seems so alive. I guess it's possible with any multi-player game, just that we chose the DOTA option.
Okay besides simply acting as a place to get together online, another thing is that it's fun! The fun thing about online games like this is the many different variations that can occur with every new game that commences. Different hero combinations with different players will produce different resutls which will in turn affect the course of the game. So it's a challenge to adapt to the cirumcstances and try out different strategies to work the game to your advantage. Granted DOTA isn't really as strategic as the actual Frozen Throne. That was when your brain had to work overtime and your hands had to work even faster micromanaging everything. But with the falling popularity of the standard game, DOTA is a simple and effective replacement. The simplicity of DOTA makes it easy to pick up. Choose your hero, learn the skills and whack! More advanced gameplay comes logically as you think it through your head.
One very important factor in why we DOTA is because it is free! It is a one time cost in buying Frozen Throne, if you even buy the original (which we did), and you get a lifetime connection to Battle.net. See for people like us that's very crucial! Paying so much for World of Warcraft isn't really my thing and Maplestory, though free, lends itself toward buying of pre-paid cash. That's how most free online games work nowadays. DOTA, has alright graphics, simple yet addictive gameplay, regular updates to keep it fresh and many people to play with!
There is, of course, an opportunity cost of playing DOTA. It's not good to play too much because it really doesn't add any value besides entertainment and fulfilling an obligation to friendship. One or two games are enough and the rest of the time can be spent better on more practical things. DOTA is a simple and effective form of entertainment just like how pool, arcade or bowling serves the same purpose. But DOTA allows you to do so from the comfort of your own home and without spending too much money.
That, my friends is why we DOTA in a nutshell.
