If you're just walking around on a weekday not knowing what to do, go watch The Brave One. It's not a blockbuster hit, neither is it an action packed Jet Li show nor a romantic Love Actually. What it is, is a quiet yet intriguing journey of a lady traumatised by assault and taking the law in her own hands. It explores the controversial issue of death without trial as well as the right to kill. If you thought that was it, it cleverly touches on the moral dilemma of protecting a friend from the law.
Ironically, one part of the show that interested me was Jodie Foster's occupation. She worked for a radio station as a radio host, having her own show titled "Streetwalk". What she basically did was to do narratives on New York city, pretty much like a mix between a blog and a podcast. She goes around with a recorder recording everyday city sounds before heading home to read her script and mixing the music in. Of course there are parts that she does live on air but if you think about it, doesn't that mean that everyone can basically have their own radio show, being their own journalist? We are in a flattened world and the internet is giving everyone their own space. What's there to stop more of these independent media from actually earning their own dough?
It's food for thought what you can do in this world at this place and time. We are living in exciting times, possibly held back by the unequal development of different regions in the world. As countries become richer and more developed, physical violence becomes less and less enticing. Hopefully when the rest of the world catches up with development and sees what economic growth can do for everyone rather than internal conflict, less emphasis will be put on arms threats and the world can actually focus on more productive things.
