Relativity

The world is a funny place is it not? Everything is relative to something else rather than taken at an absolute value. Perhaps it's just our nature and a brain kind of function to work like that. Firstly, the price of crude oil has fallen from ~USD140 down to USD116 or so. Relative to a year ago, it's still expensive but relative to a couple of weeks ago, it suddenly seems much cheaper. Having gotten used to prices at >USD130, the current price seems much better yet there was so much hoo-ha not too long ago about oil hitting USD100.

Then we have the Russia-Georgia issue. What would normally be frontpage news, especially with the safety of this oil pipeline of which ~1% of the world's oil passes through, is suddenly relegated because of the Beijing Olympics. I must admit it was a very wise decision to time to the conflict to coincide with the games since the world's attention would be on Beijing. In a relative fashion, what should've made headlines all over the world is now taking a backseat. Bush is still cheering the American atheletes on in Beijing if you haven't noticed.

Alright that was just something that popped into my head while I was surfing around.
